FROM MY PRACTICE:
For the first time in my life, I am no longer controlled by food. Thank you for teaching me this life-changing approach – it has made all the difference.
-Haley, Highland Park, IL
Judith got me started on an amazing journey that led me to understand how my eating behaviors and body image were actually windows into the way that I did and thought about everything – not just the way I ate or what size I was. As a result her group, I have grown into the person I was meant be - I am happy, content and fulfilled in all areas of my life. I am thankful and honored to be able to still reach out to Judith for ideas, resources and thoughts. She is a dedicated, caring and knowledgeable pioneer in the ever-expanding field of intuitive eating - the only authentic answer to ending the use of food to cover our emotional discomforts.
-Arlene, Chicago, IL
Your compassionate style and wisdom have helped me to understand how I was using food to take care of so many other needs. I’m grateful for our work together and for the calmness I now feel in my relationship with food.
-Kristen, Buffalo Grove, IL
It continually amazes me, how much power there is in such a group. Slowly, but surely, it's as if the group's power can be absorbed and become your own. We who have never learned to trust, learn to trust the others, and then ourselves....and then, food begins to lose that imaginary power and takes it's rightful place as fuel, and a gift of pleasure rather than a source of pain. I’m grateful that I was able to be in such a warm and nurturing group.
-J.J. Naperville, IL
I never thought I would be able to stop the bingeing that started when I was a teenager, and that caused me to gain weight. After working with Judith in individual counseling I can finally stop eating when I’m full and even look in the mirror at myself with a smile.
-Shirley, Chicago, IL
Judith has a gift for understanding what it is like to be a compulsive eater, and for helping you to stop being so hard on yourself. Instead, I now trust myself with food and rarely overeat. If you’re tired of diets that don’t work, then I highly recommend Judith’s approach.
-Linda, Palatine, IL
After I gained back all of the weight I lost from my last diet, my doctor referred me to Judith. I no longer binge, and I’ve learned how important exercise is to my physical health. My doctor has given me a clean bill of health.

FROM MY BOOKS:
The Diet Survivor’s Handbook:
Dear Judith and Ellen,
I wanted to thank you for The Diet Survivor’s Handbook. I picked it up last weekend and could not put it down – it is amazing and has absolutely changed my life! I have struggled my entire life with dieting, and despite having a Ph.D in psychology have never been content with my body. I am now a professor and am often shocked by the body image problems in my graduate students – despite being intelligent people they hate their bodies and have such low self-esteem. I am going to recommend your book and publicize it within our department.
Misty, West Haven CT
Hi Ellen and Judith,
I have been working with a client for awhile who was feeling somewhat “stuck.” I sent her home with The Diet Survivor’s Handbook, and she came in yesterday, clutching the book, saying, “This book changed my life.” I just had to tell you!
Carmen, Boulder CO

Dr. Linda Bacon, University of California-Davis, author of Health At Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight
Dear Judith and Ellen,
I can’t believe it! After years of struggling with overeating, I can finally go out with friends and eat like a normal person. Thanks to The Diet Survivor’s Handbook, I no longer deprive myself of the food I love. I’ve followed your advice and really listen to my body to tell me when I’m hungry and when I’m full. It’s made all the difference in the world! Kristin, Akron OH
I am a text-book case of the yo-yo dieter that Judith & Ellen describe in their book. I would gear-up, diet, lose about 10 pounds, get antsy after about 3-4 months, binge, then gain back the 10 and then some. I was intrigued by the idea that you could avoid having to restrict yourself, track points, calories etc., and simply get in-tune with your own physical comfort as it relates to food and eating.
I made some subtle modifications to the way I eat. I never feel stuffed anymore after a meal, and literally felt light enough to start an exercise regimen, which resulted in further weight loss. This book turns the whole idea of dieting on its head. I hope Oprah sniffs it out so she can share it with the world.

Beyond a Shadow of a Diet:
“Bravo! A compassionate, extraordinarily thorough and helpful guide for therapists struggling with their own and their clients’ obsessions with body image and compulsive eating. [It] offers a truly effective approach to the culturally induced preoccupation with body size that so often derails treatment. Life-changing on both sides of the consulting room.”
—Jane Hirschmann and Carol H. Munter, authors of Overcoming Overeating and When Women Stop Hating their Bodies
“A must read! I would recommend this book to anyone affected by struggles with food and weight.”
—Debra Waterhouse, MPH, RD, author of Like Mother, Like Daughter and Why Women Need Chocolate
“Learning to eat with hunger, to relish food, and to enjoy one’s body is our birthright. Beyond a Shadow of a Diet explains how individuals can begin to live in harmony with food and gives therapists the tools to better help those for whom eating has become, too often, a source of anguish rather than a pleasurable and reassuring part of life.”
—Susie Orbach, Ph.D., author of Fat is a Feminist Issue, Hunger Strike, and On Eating
“This book is a gem! The authors have compiled a definitive, powerful, and highly readable justification for shifting the
paradigm in our understanding of issues of weight and health. Just the right mix of science, theory, and practical application.”
—Jon Robison, Ph.D., MS, Assistant Professor, Michigan State University; co-editor of Health at Every Size
I just finished your book, and I wanted to tell you that it has changed the way I work with my clients. This should be required reading for all therapists!
I just finished reading your book, and I think it's brilliant! I plan to share this information with my colleagues.

FROM MY CONSULTATION/CUSTOMIZED TRAINING:
I have had the privilege of working with Judith since June 2007. Her expertise in her field has contributed to the evolution of our program from a traditional weight management to a holistic approach based on intuitive eating. As a consulting practitioner, Judith is a team player, contributing to the format development of the program with integrity and insight. Her passion for her life work is obvious as she guides individuals struggling with weight.
Judith also speaks at our annual orientation and her presentation skills are excellent. The audience engages with her and they walk away wanting more of her.
Paulette Brody, Program Director
As a therapist experienced with the non-diet approach, I used Judith as a consultant for help with expanding my program. I appreciated how Judith took care in understanding what was important to me in my program, while at the same time provided valuable input based on her wealth of experience and knowledge. She is a great resource and wonderful to work with - I would highly recommend her!

Deb Lang, Licensed Psychologist, RD
As a professional with a background in human muscle physiology and basic research, I contacted Judith for her Beyond a Shadow of a Diet training for myself and for the psychotherapy professionals that I am working with. In the time span of just one day, Judith was able to thoroughly articulate the core concepts that lie at the heart of the non-diet approach to treating compulsive/binge eating and body image issues. Her innovative approach focusing on physical well-being and “attuned” eating rather than weight and diet restrictions was clearly and comprehensively presented, and was well received by all professional participants attending the workshop.
In speaking with the other participants after the workshop, it was clear that we each came away feeling as though we had a new, healthier perspective regarding weight and body image. We had all attended multiple workshops and conferences in the past, but Judith was able to provide us all with new concepts that we could easily apply in our work with clients. Judith’s workshop was supplemented with visual aids including a power point presentation and a DVD with personal testimonials from both health professionals and patients struggling with compulsive eating and body image that gave us an inside look as to what, specifically, patients are struggling with and how they came to find peace with food and body acceptance.
Judith’s training went beyond our expectations. For example, her small group interactive exercise had a great impact on all of us as we explored our attitudes toward weight, food and body image. Her messages about focusing on wellness rather than weight gave us a forward thinking, long-term approach that will change the way we will work with clients.
